How long an oxygen cylinder would last?

Jairam Respiratory Health mission.

Many patients would require oxygen supplementation during acute illness and hospitalization. Those suffering with advance disease may require oxygen supplementation even after discharge. We have various way of delivering oxygen to the patients. oxygen cylinders are the most commonly used for this purpose.  Oxygen cylinders are also used for patients’ transportation in ambulance and shifting of patients from one location to another location within the hospital. Most commonly used cylinders in hospital for these purposes are E type cylinders. E type Oxygen cylinders contain 622 liters of oxygen. At flow rate of 10 litter per minute cylinder would last just over 1 hour. At the flow rate of 5 liters per minute, cylinder would last just over two hours. At the flow rate of 2 liters per minute cylinder would last just over 5 hours and at the flow rate of 1 liter per minute cylinder would last for around 10 hours. So, if patient requires high flow of oxygen (more than 5 litters per minute), cylinder will become empty in less than 2 hours and require frequent change, making it practically difficult to use. We also have G type cylinder, which has capacity of 5260 liters. However, these cylinders are very bulky and difficult to move around limiting its use for patients’ transportation and home care.
